PAGET'S DISEASE OF THE BREAST AND GENITALS
These conditions were named after Sir James Paget who
discovered them as well as Paget’s disease of
the bone. Although sharing the same name they are completely
unrelated.
Paget’s disease of the breast is an eczema like
change in the skin of the nipple and 9 out of 10 women
who have this have an underlying breast cancer. It occurs
extremely rarely in men.
Paget’s disease of the genitals rarely occurs
in men over the age of 60 and women after the menopause.
It is caused by abnormal changes in skin cells of the
penis and vulva and presents as a type of skin irritation.
It is not a cancer but can become cancerous if not treated.
